Formed in 2016, the Perth quartet introduced themselves with the EP No Way to Treat an Animal, featuring energetic tracks like “Thrills,” an ode to the joys of being young and stupid. But by the time they’d released their debut album, 2020’s Sunlight, they’d progressed to the jangly, cinematic sounds of hit singles like “Booster Seat.” There are shades of fellow Perth outfits Tame Impala and Methyl Ethel in their blend of melodic pop and big guitars, which, when combined with the reflective lyrics of frontman Caleb Harper, create a sound that also recalls Australian alternative acts of the 1990s such as Powderfinger and Grinspoon. Even though there’s more refinement in Sunlight songs like “Good Grief” when compared to the garage rock urgency of their early material, Spacey Jane has always had a knack for creating crowd-pleasing anthems.
