When pianist, bandleader and composer Bebo Valdés died in 2013 at the grand age of 94, he left behind a dynamic, forward-thinking and downright sparkling catalogue of Cuban jazz, big-band mambo and solo piano music. The sleek grooving of “Pa Goza”, the deceptively simple virtuosity of “Marta”, the tangible emotional shifts of “La Comparsa”—it was all in a day’s work for the Grammy-winning Valdés. His legacy is such that he’s regarded as one of the creators of the Latin jazz movement—he even pioneered his own rhythm, the batanga, in the 1950s—and his music remains as captivating as ever.
