Intimacy is a comforting constant in the songs of Lepani Tuifagalele. Born in Fiji before relocating to Aotearoa New Zealand as a child, the singer-songwriter taught himself how to record and produce his work at home. That lends an air of confiding closeness to his tracks, especially when they’re so often steeped in the thrills and spills of romance. “My friends say I sing too much about heartbreaks/But my mistakes are the only way/That my mixtapes can mean anything to me,” Tuifagalele sings to open the 2019 piano ballad “Pocket Full of Love.” And rather than being a downbeat confessional, 2024’s “Sober” is a surprisingly frisky electro-pop track about keeping loneliness at bay. While we’re usually only hearing his point of view in the aftermath of a split, the 2024 duet “Antidote” invites in Saint Martin singer Tamillia for a subtle bit of counterpoint.
