Activists: DeRay Mckesson
Playlist - 30 Songs
Ever recognizable on-scene by his signature blue Patagonia vest, DeRay Mckesson is an educator, civil rights activist, podcaster, and author of the critically acclaimed memoir On the Other Side of Freedom: The Case for Hope. For Black History Month 2020, Mckesson created a playlist of mellow moods featuring acts of different eras, including “Yo Love” by Vince Staples and Greg O’Quin ’n Joyful Noyze’s “I Told the Storm.” “‘Yo Love’ reflects the way I love black people—the depth of commitment to blackness, the readiness to risk freedom to gain freedom, the fear that comes with love, and the way love changes over time, but remains intact,” Mckesson tells Apple Music. “‘I Told the Storm’ is my reminder that I am a part of something bigger than me, that activism is about ushering in a world that we don’t have yet but that we know we deserve.”
