Stockholm's Candlemass took Black Sabbath's trademark sound and made the songs even slower, longer, and more ominous, giving birth to the doom-metal genre. The very name of their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, says a lot of what you need to know about the band. And while Sabbath went through a few stylistic changes, Candlemass have been singlemindedly heavy through their three decades of breakups, reunions, and personnel changes; their sixth lead singer Mats Leven joined in 2012. They remain an inspiration to heavy and doomy bands everywhere.
