Ask any Kiwi to explain the roots of their strong indie scene and they'll probably start with Chris Knox. Emerging from '70s punk bands The Enemy and Toy Love, he really found his voice in Tall Dwarfs, a duo with Alec Bathgate, recording a series of catchy, off-kilter albums on a four-track recorder. As a solo artist he continued to work in a DIY manner, spinning wry, melodic indie rock out of scuzzy guitars and cheap keyboards. For your first taste check out “Not Given Lightly,” a classic lo-fi love song that punches way above its weight. After that you'll want lots more Knox.
