Jill Scott’s second album is full of loquacious, introspective sermons that infuse gentle, soulful arrangements with themes of relationships, womanhood, and self-love. She explores the messy complications and awkward arguments shared by relations on the funky ’70s grooves of “Family Reunion” and demands that men do better on the quaking, beautiful “The Fact Is.” While Scott dials her voice to a satin-smooth croon for the most part, she holds nothing back on the brash, sunny R&B anthem “Golden.”
