Desmond and the Tutus
Tuckshop (Deluxe)
Album - Indie Rock, Music, Alternative
Desmond and the Tutus released their debut, Tuckshop, when SA indie music seemed like an afterthought. Their kwela/indie-punk hybrid was a bit too left field for the alternative crowd, and vocalist Shane Durrant's quirky persona and dance moves were a bit too weird for everyone else. But the Pretoria band’s devil-may-care attitude eventually found a hipster following, partly thanks to then-new music channel MK89. Desmond and the Tutus’ fast-paced dance riffs and surf-rock aesthetic helped make Tuckshop an instant classic, and half of its tracks remains a staple of their gigs to this day.
