Early Daze
Album - Psychedelic, Music, Rock
Early Daze provides a great glimpse into the English space-rock pioneers’ prowess as a live tour de force. The first three songs come from BBC radio sessions during 1970 and 1971. Though the fidelity's a bit dusty, you get a sense of the band’s uncanny chemistry from first cut, “Hurry On Sundown,” where it blends British folk-rock with the otherworldly analog freak-outs that defined them. Similarly, “Dreaming” starts with a wah-wah pedal undulating guitar waves through thick walls of reverb while Dave Brock sings like he’s howling at the heavens. You can just envision the band’s exotic dancer, Stacia, writhing around a glitter- and body paint–covered stage during the driving intergalactic maelstrom of sonic mayhem that is “Master of the Universe.” Tracked at London’s Wembley Arena, the second half of Early Daze boasts an incredible version of “Silver Machine,” featuring a young and ferocious-sounding Lemmy on lead vocals.
