Bad Detectives

With their harmonica out to slash tires and their simple, straightforward productions in place, the U.K.’s Bad Detectives make a run at furthering the cause of garage rock in 2010. The genre has been shockingly resilient, forging a resurgence in the mid-80s, after first emerging in the mid-1960s. Twenty-five years since the first major revival, new tunes arrive and the tradition continues. The Bad Detectives are surprisingly clean sounding, considering the genre. They’re less “psycho” when it comes to “Psychobilly” and their R&B pub rock is mostly comprised of unusually earnest upbeat tunes such as “Binge Drinkin’ Baby,” “Midnight Brighton Run” and “Folks, I Swear It’s True.” They’re a mostly sober sounding bunch considering the amount of alcohol swimming through these songs. “12 Square Beers” rolls past as a likable mid-tempo with none of the usual menace. On their third album, the Bad Detectives take larger aim at a pop accessibility that could take them out of the garage for good.
