Roswell Rudd
Trombone for Lovers
Album - Jazz, Music, Avant-Garde Jazz
With roots in Dixieland and avant-garde jazz and recent forays into Malian music and trombone orchestras, it’s hard to guess what direction trombonist Roswell Rudd will go with each new album. This time he shoots for a little bit of everything while featuring a galaxy of personnel (anchored by a core group of Rudd, John Medeski on B3, bassist Richard Hammond, and drummer Aaron Comess). Such varied highlights include a loving version of the dreamy Santo & Johnny classic “Sleepwalk,” the swing guitar-driven “Autumn Leaves,” and an aptly funky version of Booker T & The MGs' “Green Onions.” Rudd closes things with the three-part “Joe Hill,” which features two tracks with The NYC Labor Chorus and one with rapper Reggie Bennett. What Rudd successfully does here and elsewhere else on the album is show how versatile his instrument can be in the hands of the right player.
