Active during the 2000s, Andersens served as a Japanese counterpart to the psychedelic and orchestral indie pop of the Elephant 6 scene happening in the States at the same time. Combining gentle twee melodies, moments of gentle folksiness, and Beatles-inspired pop-psych arrangements, Andersens released multiple albums in their most active times, and collected the best of their output for the 2020 retrospective compilation There Is a Sound.
Andersens was formed in 2000 by Kiyokazu Onozaki. He was a huge fan of '60s pop and psychedelic sounds, and was inspired to work on his own band when he discovered Japanese groups like the Tenniscoats and Maher Shalal Hash Baz that were making strange sounds influenced by the same artists he loved. Andersens was based around Onozaki's songwriting and arrangements, bringing in a collective of musicians to help him flesh out his creations. After self-releasing a four-song CD-R in 2002, debut album Between Static and Fire arrived in 2003. Over the next five years, Onozaki and friends would release three more albums, 2004's Prepared Landscape, 2007's Gzi Gzi Gzeo, and 2008's Musiquestions.
After an Andersens track was released on a 2020 compilation of obscure Japanese indie pop, work began on a compilation album that picked songs from each of the group's releases. Co-curated by Onozaki and Notwist member Markus Acher, There Is a Sound collected 16 tracks from Andersens' discography and was released in October 2020 on the Morr Music label. ~ Fred Thomas
