Born in 1976 in Benoni, Gauteng, Gerhard Steyn is a popular Afrikaans pop, rock, and gospel musician who’s become a permanent fixture on South African adult-contemporary radio thanks to lively love songs—like his 2008 hit “Baby Tjoklits”—delivered in his husky vocal tone over electric guitar licks and explosive drums. Steyn’s career began when he joined forces with fellow singer Liane Heyl (a.k.a. Boeboe) in the early 2000s before forming the duo Windpomp with coproducer and bassist/guitarist Naas de Jager. However, Steyn’s extensive discography contains more than just his signature ballads: He began dabbling in gospel on his 2012 album, Nuwe Krag, in which he sings about his faith in Jesus Christ and the importance of prayer in a country that faces social unrest stemming from a history of racial segregation and inequality.
