A legend in his hometown of Macon, Georgia, but an undeservedly little known figure beyond, Johnny Jenkins nonetheless greatly influenced music history. In the late '50s and early '60s, he tore up stages with a wild showmanship that impressed a young Jimi Hendrix (who copped his playing-behind-the-neck moves); he also hired an unknown Otis Redding to front his band, the Pinetoppers. Jenkins played some of the most torrid electric blues of his era--plying his guitar with both swampy looseness and fleet-fingered ferocity. After his solo debut, the classic TON-TON MACOUTE!, Jenkins quit the business and re-emerged in the late '90s with a comeback several albums deep.
