Finland's Joona Toivanen Trio blend elegantly structured contemporary jazz with free improvisation and a lyrical, often pastoral tone. Active since the late '90s, the group have become known for their warm, innovative style and innate chemistry and are widely established throughout Europe. After several independent releases they earned international recognition for their 2006 album, Frost, released by Blue Note. In the 2010s, the group was a staple of Italy's C.A.M. Jazz and celebrated their 20th anniversary with 2017's XX. After this, they signed with cutting-edge Finnish label We Jazz and released the more experimental Both Only in 2022, followed in 2025 by Gravity.
