Singer, songwriter, and producer Kamal. creates soulful bedroom pop that exists between lush and stripped-down. Born in Harlesden, North West London to Caribbean British parents, the artist began playing piano at age 6, before eventually writing songs on ukulele. Influenced by neo-soul icons like Sade, D’Angelo, and Erykah Badu, Kamal.’s unguarded approach to music reflects the unabashed vulnerability of his predecessors. His debut single, the Motown-tinged “smilingdownthephone,” released in 2019, provided a glimpse of Kamal.’s tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve, musically. His breakthrough single, 2020’s wistful “homebody,” was released one week before the pandemic hit the UK, serendipitously reflecting the eventual habits of people across the world. In 2021, Kamal. released his debut EP, war outside, a masterful project that is as serene as it is intentional, as evinced by the resonant title track. Through relatable lyrics and tender vocals, Kamal. invites us to feel every emotion with him.
