Singer-songwriter Moses Sumney is critically acclaimed for his thoughtful writing, ethereal vocals, and layered soundscapes that deliberately defy categorization.
â Growing up in Southern California and his parentsâ native Ghana, he wrote more than 100 a cappella songs before teaching himself to play guitar and piano as a young adult.
â In 2013, TV on the Radio producer Dave Sitek gave Sumney the 4-track he used to record his debut EP, 2014âs Mid-City Island.
â He sang and coproduced âTitle of This Songâ on the 2013 compilation Song Reader, featuring various artistsâ recordings of tunes from Beckâs book of sheet music.
â Pop star Solange asked her friend Sumney to sing backup on âMad (feat. Lil Wayne),â from her 2016 album, A Seat at the Table.
â The 2017 debut Aromanticism and 2020âs grĂŠ were both included in year-end âbest ofâ lists by Pitchfork, NPR, and The New York Times.
