Nana Mouskouri offered her pop soprano to the world in at least a dozen languages and, in doing so, became an international star. Born Ioanna Mouskouri in Chania, Greece, in 1934, she began singing lessons at 12 and studied classical music at the Athens Conservatory before being booted for moonlighting as a jazz vocalist. Her collaborative relationship with songwriter Manos Hadjidakisl led to the folksy 1961 German-language hit “The White Rose of Athens.” In the ‘60s, she represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with “À force de prier” and worked with Harry Belafonte on 1965’s An Evening with Belafonte/Mouskouri. She toured relentlessly in the ‘70s and further increased her profile as host of the BBC’s Presenting Nana Mouskouri. Her most wide-reaching song, “Je chante avec toi liberté,” was released in 1981. Along with this enduring musical legacy, Mouskouri also served as Greek deputy to the European Parliament from 1994 to 1999. While she has since stopped touring, she released Forever Young in 2018, which featured selections by artists like Leonard Cohen, who described Mouskouri’s voice as “strong, clear, simple, and true.”
Nana Mouskouri heeft ook muziek uitgebracht als lid van Les Enfoirés.
