Not to be confused with Sulene Fleming of Brand New Heavies and Dimitris & Sulene, Sulene is short for Brooklyn-based musician Sulene van der Walt. Making anthemic indie pop as a solo artist, she's also worked under her full name as a film/TV composer and as a touring guitarist for acts including Nate Ruess, Betty Who, and Candy Hearts. The South Africa native, who started playing guitar at age 14, graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in film scoring in 2013. In 2014, she was credited with contributions to Barry Levinson's film The Humbling and additional music for the Liev Schreiber crime series Ray Donovan. Meanwhile touring as a sidewoman, she followed those and some uncredited film work with scores for the short films The Weight of Wind (2016) and Strength and Fortune (2017). In January 2017, van der Walt released the reflective synth pop tune "What We Had," her first single as Sulene. Written while on the road, her debut EP, Strange, followed that spring on Sleep Well Records. ~ Marcy Donelson
