Led by Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith, UK nu-jazz ensemble The Cinematic Orchestra pairs classically trained musicians with synths and turntables. The group’s improvisational style involves sampling and manipulating live riffs in real time.
• The band was formed when Swinscoe brought the musicians a collection of jazz samples to interpret. Swinscoe recorded the sessions and remixed them to create the 1999 debut album Motion.
• Living up to their name, The Cinematic Orchestra have scored two films: Man with a Movie Camera (2003) and The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos (2009).
• The Cinematic Orchestra’s heart-wrenching 2009 single “To Build a Home” has been heard in no fewer than 30 films, TV series, and advertisements.
