Over The Ruby Suns
The Ruby Suns were started by Ryan McPhun, a nomadic musician raised in California who moved to Auckland, New Zealand, in the early '00s. There, he began associating with kindred spirits fluent in the styles (paisley pop, psych, Polynesian island rhythms) that would define his group's sound. Concurrently, McPhun played with NZ bands like the Nudie Suits and the Brunettes, touring the U.S. (as openers for the Shins) with the latter, and cycled through Ruby Sun members until coalescing as a trio with Amee Robinson and Imogen Taylor. Freak accidents (a tour van fire, the breakage of a music-packed hard drive) couldn't prevent the band from following up their self-titled debut with the ambitious SEA LION in 2008.
