Formed in '87, by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley, Alice In Chains rose to fame as part of the early-‘90s grunge movement alongside fellow Seattle bands Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. While Alice In Chains' approach to grunge incorporated heavy metal and acoustic elements, it was the vocal harmonies of Staley and Cantrell that made their sound unique. In '96, AIC went on an unofficial hiatus while Staley battled a drug addiction, to which he succumbed in '02. A reunited AIC began performing with vocalist William DuVall in ‘05, recording Black Gives Way to Blue and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here.
