For decades, Paul Mac has steadily broadened the boundaries of electronic music. The classically trained Sydney native dabbled in assorted acts before making a lasting impact with Andy Rantzen in techno duo Itch-E & Scratch-E, winning the inaugural ARIA Award for Best Dance Release for their euphoric 1994 single “Sweetness and Light.” The pair continued to popularize dance music in Australia across the 1990s, before Mac scored that same ARIA for his 2001 solo debut 3000 Feet High. Led by Peta Morris’ breakout vocals on the gospel-house hit “Just the Thing,” the album’s success emboldened Mac to feature Ngaiire, Aaradhna, and other singers on 2005’s Panic Room while reuniting with Morris for the quieter, more soulful “Sunshine Eyes.” Remixing global acts both on his own and with Jonny Seymour in the production duo Stereogamous, Mac remained an in-demand hired gun throughout the 2010s and yet returned to solo work on 2015’s Holiday from Me—adding Megan Washington and Kira Puru to his already deep bench of vocalists—and 2019’s Mesmerism. His regular soundtrack work led him to the train-based 2024 installation for Vivid Sydney and an accompanying soundtrack packed with simultaneously propulsive and wobbly electronic themes like “Saint James Lake Lustre.”
