Sydney siblings Angus and Julia Stone found their alt-folk destiny noodling on guitars as backpacking teens. His roots-pop croak and her dark, baby-doll whimsy made a winning combination on the festival circuit, while their 2006 debut single, “Paper Aeroplane,” cast an entrancing spell that has carried into their subsequent work. The pair’s career-making moment came with 2010’s “Big Jet Plane,” a strings-gilded smash in Australia that topped triple j’s Hottest 100 poll and became a café staple in the rest of the world. Between that song and its source album, Down the Way, the duo took home five ARIAs in one year and embarked on many a jet plane as a result. “Sometimes you’re sitting in an airport and there’s a delayed flight, and it was your birthday last week and you’re already meant to be home,” Julia told Apple Music in 2024. “That’s the nature of a life that spans across the globe.” After solo success for both in 2012—and before the fruition of Angus’ rock guise DOPE LEMON—they tapped superproducer Rick Rubin for the increased warmth and depth of tracks like 2014’s “Heart Beats Slow.” The siblings’ unique creative alchemy has continued right through 2017’s “Chateau,” which went seven times platinum at home, and 2024’s “Cape Forestier,” another poignant tune inspired by world travel.
