After rising to fame in the mid-'00s leading the vocal group Bhumiband, Awi Rafael went solo with his debut Karyawan in 2011. In a step away from the world of romantic piano-and-strings ballads and seductive vocals, the singer/songwriter took on a fully-fledged rock sound, complete with charging electric guitars. The successful follow-up Asalkan Aku OK arrived a year later as other collaborations with Jinbara, rapper Altimet and trio Girl Republik have seen him branch out adeptly into rhythmic hard rock, melodic hip-hop and soul-infused dance-pop in a surprisingly varied career.
