The sole constant in X Ambassadors' sound is the element of surprise. Approaching rock, electronic music, hip-hop, and R&B as though they were interchangeable parts rather than distinct genres, they excel at making each new single wildly unique from the last. If 2015's “Unsteady”—one of the monster hits of the '10s—pins moody piano rock to digital percussion, then the equally popular “Renegades” gives off a folksy feel as the band coasts across a bend of acoustic guitars. Lead singer Sam Harris has no problem keeping up, as he possesses a voice capable of bringing soulful intensity to both booming anthems and tender ballads in equal measure.
