Miles Davis had great taste when it came to sidemen. By drafting Rollins into his group in the ‘50s, the trumpeter not only got a fine saxophonist but also gained access to fresh tunes like “Oleo”—the mellow, reedy sound that Rollins uses for the bop melody beautifully merges with Davis' muted tone. Later that decade, Rollins also spun out vibrato phrases on tunes like “Strong Man” next to vocalist Abbey Lincoln.
