The Apartments have never been able to stay together and have over the years proven to really be the musical vehicle for the brilliant singer-songwriter Peter Milton Walsh. 1985’s The Evening Visits… served as the debut album for the “band” after several singles and an EP released several years apart made for Walsh’s introduction. Walsh is a dour man, prone to emotionalism that can lead him off-key (the cello-driven “All the Birthdays”) to devastating effect. The extra reverb makes him sound like a man abandoned in the drunktank with only his demons for comfort. Walsh isn’t always so extreme. The measured, somber tones of “Sunset Hotel” are beautifully accompanied with sitting-room piano. Flugelhorn opens the surprisingly jovial “Great Fool.” But for the most part, this is one downcast dude. “Speechless With Tuesday” and “The Black Road Shines” grind like blues. Walsh remains an Australian cult figure with a musical debt to Nick Drake and a style often similar to Prefab Sprout’s Paddy McAloon.
