A cellist and composer who wrote a classy and imaginative score for Alan Rickman’s 2015 movie A Little Chaos, Peter Gregson turns to one of the quintessential chamber music line-ups, the string quartet. With occasional nods to, perhaps, French masters such as Debussy and Ravel, Gregson’s atmospheric musical language edges towards an ambient mood. However, there’s enough texture and sinew to anchor it to the ‘real’ world of gut on string. A track such as “The Day Before” seems to breathe with its players, creating a mesmerizing sound picture.
