Asha Bhosle is one of India’s most powerful, emotive forces in film music. Since the 1940s, she has brought gravitas and glee to her performances.
• Bhosle is the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. The two siblings became sought-after voices in Indian film music, while also singing devotional songs in several different languages.
• Early in her career, Bhosle explored different tonalities. There were jangly, frenetic-paced songs like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” from 1972’s Caravan and “Dum Maro Dum” from 1973’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna—both which earned her Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.
• One of her biggest hits arrived in 1973 with composer R.D. Burman’s “Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko” from Bollywood blockbuster Yaadon Ki Baaraat.
• She has frequently worked with iconic Bollywood voice Kishore Kumar. Their highlights together include “Kehdoon Tumhe” from 1975’s Deewaar and the warm, lilting title track from 1982’s Yeh Vaada Raha.
• Bhosle’s projects include empowering songs like “Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main” from 1995’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and “Rangeela Re” and “Tanha Tanha Yahan Pe Jeena” from 1995’s Rangeela.
• Her seemingly ageless soprano voice is in full cry on A. R. Rahman’s “Radha Kaise Na Jale” from the epic 2001 drama Lagaan.
• In 1996, she performed lead vocals on sarod master Ali Akbar Khan’s Legacy. It earned a 1997 Grammy Award nomination for Best World Music Album.
