Death-rock icons Bauhaus arose in 1978 Northampton, England, when guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J, and drummer Kevin Haskins, added vocalist Peter Murphy and his now-famous wail to their band the Craze. Renamed Bauhaus after the German art movement, they released their 1979 debut single, the dark, riveting epic "Bela Lugosi's Dead," which established the group as godfathers of goth. Their first album, In the Flat Field, led by the black-hearted single "Dark Entries," added to their mystique. Their 1981 follow-up, Mask, saw them expanding their palette beyond their gloom-rock core with tracks like “Hair of The Dog” seemingly made for the dance floor. The Sky's Gone Out marked the band’s commercial peak with a melancholy cover of “Ziggy Stardust,” which helped propel the album to No. 4 on the UK charts. The band split after Burning from the Inside, with David J and Daniel Ash forming Love and Rockets and Murphy pursuing a successful solo career. They have since reformed sporadically to tour and release new music, including 2022’s eerie electro single “Drink the New Wine.”
