French soprano Mathilde Etienne co-founded the Baroque opera company I Gemelli and has performed and recorded with the group. A major specialist in the music of Monteverdi, she is also active as an opera director, including in works from periods other than the Baroque. In 2009, Etienne made her debut as a director, leading a production of Bizet's Carmen at the Théâtre de Gémeaux de Sceaux and the Théâtre du Trianon. Etienne began to find performance opportunities with leading Baroque groups. In 2019, Etienne and husband Emiliano Gonzalez Toro co-founded the opera company I Gemelli, devoted to performances and recordings of Monteverdi's operas. The group recorded L'Orfeo in 2020 and Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria in 2023.
