Nakash Aziz is proof that early elimination from a reality TV singing competition does not necessarily end a career. The vocalist and composer from the small town of Moodabidri, on the outskirts of Mangaluru, was among the first to be sent home during the second season of Indian Idol in 2005. Two decades on, he’s an in-demand playback singer working across the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi film industries.
Aziz is often enlisted by music directors to add an energetic impishness to their dance tunes. Those who frequently call on him include his mentor, A.R. Rahman, for whom Aziz worked as an arranger, and Pritam, with whom he’s delivered some of his most-loved tunes such as “Saree Ke Fall Sa” from 2013’s R… Rajkumar (2013) and “The Breakup Song” from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016.
Among Aziz’s growing list of south Indian-language hits are his contributions to Devi Sri Prasad’s soundtracks for the Pushpa series of Telugu action films. A composer in his own right, Aziz also has music direction credits including for a number of Marathi movies and Hindi TV series.
