Philippe Pierlot has been the principal flutist of the Orchestre National de France since 1976. A fixture of the French flute scene, he is also an important educator.
Pierlot, born in Paris, is not to be confused with the Belgian viola da gamba player and group leader of the same name. Pierlot's father was an orchestral oboist. He took up the flute at 12 and became the last student of the flute pedagogue Joseph Rampal, father of French flute star Jean-Pierre Rampal. Pierlot also studied with the younger Rampal and with Alain Marion, and at 17, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatory (CNMS), where he took home impressive first prizes in flute and chamber music. He also won the Barcelona International Competition. These accomplishments propelled him to the flute first chair in the Orchestre National de France; as of 2019 he had held that position for 43 years. Pierlot has also cultivated a distinguished solo career. He has appeared with such orchestras as Les Solistes de Moscou, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, and the Orchestre National de Chambre de Toulouse, as well as becoming a fixture of French summer festivals in Evian, Colmar, and Strasbourg, among many others. As a recitalist, Pierlot has appeared across Europe, Japan, Korea, and China. He is also a member of the Turner Trio with violinist-violist Sabine Toutain and harpist Isabelle Perrin, and he has collaborated on chamber stages with such artists as harpists Lily Laskine and Marielle Nordmann, violinist Vladimir Spivakov, and trumpeter Maurice André. Pierlot has a large repertory ranging from Vivaldi to Sofia Gubaidulina and Claude Bolling, and he plays both wooden and gold flutes.
As a soloist and in groups, Pierlot has recorded for the Erato, Naxos, and Maguelone labels, among others. He is an important flute educator in France who has taught at the Toulouse Conservatory and the Rueil-Malmaison regional conservatory. Pierlot gives master classes around the world, and he has served as a jury member at the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition. ~ James Manheim
