Formed with free-form, no-rules intentions, UK avant-post-punkers Pigbag eventually suffered under the weight of their own ambition. Formed in 1980 by fashion student Chris Hamlin, he would soon add multi-instrumentalist Roger Freeman, guitarist/saxophonist James Johnstone, drummer Andrew Carpenter, and bassist Mark Smith. Their danceable, funky updating of punk’s increasingly loosened structural boundaries gained steam upon the addition of ex-Pop Group's Simon Underwood, who landed them a crucial opening gig for the Slits, which then led to a contract with Y Records and their debut LP, DR. HECKLE AND MR. JIVE. The group ultimately disbanded in 1983 but their lone smash single, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag,” is still an oft-sampled classic in the England and has moderate cult recognition overseas.
