Samantha Ege is a unique and remarkable artist, equally celebrated as a pianist and as a musicologist. She spotlights composers who have previously been overlooked, especially those who are women, Black, or both, casting fresh light on the rich diversity of classical music’s past, present, and future. In particular, she is a leading authority on the music of Florence Price. Her recitals have been termed “revelatory”, her communicative powers blending to compelling effect with nonchalant virtuosity and impassioned identification with the works she performs. It was when she started to focus on music by women that Ege felt she was truly “finding her voice” at the piano. Her recordings include an award-winning project devoted to “Black Renaissance” women, working in that upswing of culture in the US in the first decades of the 20th century. Another disc is devoted to Price’s piano works, and further programs explore respectively the music of the African diaspora and four neglected female composers. Ege was born in the UK, sharing Nigerian and Jamaican ancestry. She studied at Bristol University, McGill University, and York University, gaining her PhD on Price’s works. She was the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellow in Music at Lincoln College, University of Oxford (2020-2022) and became an Anniversary Research Fellow at the University of Southampton in 2022. Her book South Side Impresarios: Race Women in the Realm of Music is published by the University of Illinois Press.
