Japanese group Yumbo play an intricately simple style of indie pop that's informed by the experimental nature of post-punk, the freedom of jazz, and the softness of '60 pop, sunshine, and Baroque in equal measures. Beginning in the early 2000s, they issued a number of albums and EPs that covered the same emotional and sonic ground as friends and labelmates Tenniscoats. Their first record, 2004's le petit trou, laid out the band's basic sonic template in an intimate fashion, further albums built on that foundation, with 2016's Onibi entering sophisticated chamber pop territory. A selection of their work was collected by Morr Music on the 2021 compilation The Fruit of Errata.
