Pulling suave pop and R&B inflections from warm and bluesy rock, New South Wales five-piece The Rubens boast a laidback confidence that comes from three of their members being brothers. Singer/guitarist Sam Margin is especially sure-footed, whether drawling the earworm title of 2012’s breakthrough “My Gun”—which plays like a slower, rootsier answer to The Black Keys—or nailing the quicksilver flow of the chorus for 2020’s “Masterpiece.” In between those two, The Rubens scored a signature song with 2015’s “Hoops,” a multiplatinum chart-stormer that topped triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown while still ambling along like the product of a mellow jam session. On the band’s 2024 album SODA, some more diverse textures began to flood the mix, including heady synths on “Black Balloon” and a rubbery hip-hop snap on “Good Mood” and “Liquid Gold.” Yet Sam Margin remains unflappable, crooning as if feeling no pressure whatsoever. That feel-good breeziness might just be the secret ingredient of The Rubens’ continued magic.
