After leading Rio de Janeiro samba-funk band Farofa Carioca, Seu Jorge earned international solo acclaim for his laidback Portuguese-language remakes of "Life on Mars?" and other David Bowie songs from Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. His music runs both light and dark, like the rousing groove of "Carolina" from his 2001 solo debut and the woozy, electronics-enhanced version of Jorge Ben's "Errare Humanum Est" that he recorded with Almaz. Jorge's deep Brazilian roots are even more apparent on "Eu Sou Favela" ("I Am the Favela"), a heavy, cuica-accompanied samba invitation.
