The new wave and post-punk sounds that emerged from the US and UK at the end of the ’70s had no respect for national borders: By the ’80s, every European country had a flurry of bands writing knotty, wiry guitar songs alongside studio auteurs making synth-driven dance-floor hits. Portugal was no different, although these sounds were integrated with quintessentially Portuguese romantic vocals and wistful colour. Throw in a classic pop sound embracing new production techniques, and you have a portrait of a decade where stylistic reinterpretation was king.
