Budgewoi, a small town on the central east coast of Australia, may not be a world-renowned hotbed of pop-punk talent, but in Short Stack it produced one of Australia’s best exports. Formed in 2005 while its members were in their mid-teens, the trio were regarded as a local answer to Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco—courtesy of such anthems as “We Dance to a Different Disco, Honey.” From early on, the band exhibited a fondness for inserting an electronic twist into their production, including their 2008 debut “Shimmy a Go Go” and The Killers-esque, platinum-selling “Planets.” Multiple hiatuses and reunions have seen Short Stack return older and wiser, though still with a direct line to their youthful passions. Singer/guitarist Shaun Diviney brags about spending all his money on comic books during 2015’s “Amy,” while 2022’s chugging “Armageddon” evokes a bloody rite of romantic devotion.
