Gretta Ziller cuts a striking figure in Melbourne’s robust Americana scene, delivering forthright storytelling with unusually strong vocals. After beginning violin lessons while just a toddler, she later studied voice at uni and split her early professional life between singing opera and teaching bagpipes. Such depth and range of musical knowledge definitely come through in her songs. On 2017’s “Queen of Boomtown”—the title track of her debut album—Ziller pairs gentle piano notes and sharp rhythmic hits with unflinching lyrics about falling apart in tandem with her shabby surroundings. By contrast, 2021’s “Fan the Fire” veers closer to bluesy pop and 2023’s “Bones” adds gospel weight to her personal testament to self-worth. Ziller has even been known to restyle her own material down the track: An acoustic 2024 rendition of “Judas Tree” strips away the original’s rumbling alt-country to foreground haunting bluegrass elements that very much suit the lyrics’ dark, biblical slant. And on 2025’s “Gravel,” she teams up with Nashville’s Song Club founder Rachel Loy to pen a folky, heartfelt anthem about daring to brave the unknown—something she knows about all too well.
