When French cloud rappers PNL (a.k.a. Peace N’ Lovés, or Peace and Money) released 2015’s “Le monde ou rien,” it inadvertently became a rallying cry for disenfranchised youth in Paris' working-class outskirts. While it wasn’t an overtly political track, its title (“the world or nothing”) translated into a de facto demand for those suffering under austerity measures in the impoverished, segregated suburbs, channeling their anger during France's Nuit Debout riots in 2016. Of course, it helped that MCs Ademo and N.O.S—the French Algerian brothers who make up the duo—were themselves from those same largely immigrant communities. Building their own grassroots marketing campaigns and avoiding giving any interviews, PNL have come to represent those neighborhoods' hustle and resilience—and in the process have become one of France’s biggest acts. Whether they’re revisiting their humble beginnings over hazy, melodic trap beats on “Deux frères” or turning the top of the Eiffel Tower into a drug den (as they do in the video for “Au DD”) while spitting Auto-Tuned lines at hyper-speed, PNL signals a major shift in the international rap scene.
