When he began DJing as Rødhåd, Berlin's Mike Bierbach already knew what his vision of techno was. The name of his label, Dystopian, says it all: it's a sound evoking twisted rebar, cracked pavement and noxious fumes, though its dubby atmospheres and swollen bass can also be strangely graceful, like sunrise at the end of the world. He learned his craft playing opening sets and marathon closings around his native city, which explains both his intensity and his depth. Now, helming Dystopian, he leads a new school of artists, like Recondite and Distant Echoes, finding beauty in the wreckage.
