José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, better known as José José, was a beloved figure in Latin music. Making his recording debut in the late ‘60s, he really broke through at the 1970 Festival de la Canción Latina in Mexico City with his performance of Roberto Cantoral's song “El Triste.” This established him as a master of romantic ballads, and his first international tour soon followed. 1983's Secretos proved his most successful album, complete with a string of videos. His final album of new material, Tenampa, was released in 2001, and he passed away in September 2019 at age 71.
