Wowkie Da: The Meaning of New Year
Playlist - 24 Songs
Though the feisty TV personality and singer has come a long way since his teen years fronting the punk band The Flowers in the Beijing underground scene, Wowkie Da has never forgotten his roots—especially during Lunar New Year. “At the fairs you’ll see the most real, most interesting, and most traditional things that make people genuinely happy,” he tells Apple Music. “They also remind me that I’m from Beijing.” Wowkie Da has made a New Year playlist for Apple Music that focuses on happiness and relaxation, two themes essential to the holiday. “[New Year] represents the end of a year’s work,” he says. “It’s definitely the happiest and most relaxed time of year, when there’s no need to worry about the future or think about anything else.” In the playlist, you’ll find a mix of his own songs, traditional festive music, and rock hits by Green Day, Goldfinger, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, whose song “Almost Gold” he likens to the feeling of the Spring Festival itself. He considers “Hummingbird” by Wu Qing Feng to be a reminder of sorts. “Sometimes I get so busy that I don’t know what I’m even doing,” he says. “The lyric ‘What are we after? Why do we keep rushing?’ really resonates with me.” He’s also included several EDM tracks, because, he says, “Everyone should live every day like they’re dancing at the club [during Lunar New Year]. These songs will get you pumped and feeling happy!” His New Year blessing: “I wish you all happiness and health in the New Year! Avoid bad luck. Better yet, don’t get anywhere near it. And if good fortune comes your way, have the wisdom to choose what makes you happy.”
