More than just a musician, Solange Knowles represents an expansion of the roles Black artists can play and the spaces they can inhabit, tearing down boundaries that once kept performers like her out. After doing some ancillary work for her sister Beyoncé, she began toying with varied stylistic cues on 2008’s girl group homage “I Decided” and 2009’s disco-tickled “T.O.N.Y.” She also made her feelings known on 2009’s “F**k the Industry,” a song steeped in life experience. Solange emerged refreshed on her 2012 EP True, tapping producer/co-writer Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) for the melancholy club-pop flashback “Losing You” and the equally lamenting “Lovers in the Parking Lot.” But it was 2016’s A Seat at the Table that put Solange into rare air, including a spot on Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. Led by the stripped-raw lyrical reflection of the gold-selling ballad “Cranes in the Sky,” the mellow yet defiant album sketched the plight of modern Black women in ways that felt both universal and strikingly personal (see “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Weary”). Her 2019 album When I Get Home proved equally personal, playing like a richly layered love letter to her Houston upbringing thanks to the slow-burn autobiography of “Almeda” and “Way to the Show.” Working with collaborators from across hip-hop, indie rock, and beyond, Solange glides above the usual genre restrictions to arrive at whatever sound speaks to her most in the moment.
