No one did more to spread the sound of zydeco—the bluesy, high-energy, accordion-driven music of Louisiana's Black Creole population—than Buckwheat Zydeco. In the mid-'70s he played organ behind Clifton Chenier, known as the father of zydeco, and took up accordion a few years later and found success on his own. Buckwheat often remade famous New Orleans R&B and rock songs in zydeco fashion, bringing a loping groove to “Ya Ya” or imparting new meaning to Led Zeppelin's “When the Levee Breaks.” But his own material is just as strong, like the galloping “Ma ‘Tit Fille” from his 1987 breakthrough On a Night Like This.
