Hurtling and aerodynamic, Perth quartet Gyroscope broke out in the mid-'00s with high-precision anthems balancing emo yearning and art-rock boldness. But for all that streamlined momentum, their songs often pack left-field turns, from the acoustic guitar bridge lodged in the muscular “Doctor Doctor” to the solemn piano opening of the action-packed “Snakeskin.” Frontman Dan Sanders covers just as much ground, pleading and screaming with equal passion. Case in point: Against the taut dance-punk edge of “Beware Wolf,” he leaps from grounded to soaring across a fist-pumping procession of mantras.
