Starting out as a glam-rock band in 1974, U.K. chart success eluded Japan before they worked with disco king Giorgio Moroder on their "Life in Tokyo" single in 1979. Reworking their sound, the band exorcised the squealing guitars and funky bass to make way for a cool fusion of new wave, electronics, restrained Far East elements, and David Sylvian's distinctively rich and languid vocals. The switch earned them four U.K. gold albums before they split at the peak of their popularity in 1982, but they remained the iconic forefathers of the new romantic genre.
